The cross-border sheep drive over the Ötztal main Alpine ridge is one of the outstanding features of our region. This natural spectacle, which has endured for centuries, has been added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. It is the only sheep drive in the world to cross a glacier and a national border at the same time. Every year in mid-June, shepherds move three to four thousand sheep from the villages of Vernagt and Kurzras in the Schnalstal Valley over the Niederjoch and Hochjoch mountains to the summer pastures in Vent. During the sheep drive, humans and animals cover up to 44 kilometres in two days, sometimes crossing snowfields and rocky gullies. In mid-September, sheep, shepherds and dogs set off on the much less dangerous return journey.
